We present one of the most famous Japanese post-war sculptors, Tomonori TOYOFUKU, who was born in Fukuoka in 1925. The war ended just after he applied as a soldier while he was a student at Kokugakuin University in Tokyo. He returned to his hometown and learned wood sculpture under Chodo TOMINAGA.
He received the Takamura Kotaro (the first famous sculptor in Japan) Award in 1959 and was chosen as a representative of Japan for the 30th Venezia-Biennale in the following year. After that, he moved to Milan and continued to work for 40 years.
He also attended many international art fairs all over the world such as the 32nd Venezia-Biennale and Carnegie International in 1964, the Sao Paulo International Biennial in 1965 - those artworks are all purchased by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice), MoMa(NY) and others.
His signature style is a sequence of egg-shaped holes which are rhythmically carved and intersected to another. According to the sculptor, it happened coincidentally at the beginning but those holes create the void and his unique sophisticated forms in the sculpture by taking the light, shadow and air into works.
Our exhibition this time will be focusing on his career between 1960th to 1990th including both wood and bronze sculptures.
We are going to display his most sophisticated artworks, which have recently been increasing in international appraisal. We hope you can enjoy those artworks.
