"Butterflies / In the Garden of Light - Memento Mori" mixed-media 2022

Throughout his career, Masahito Katayama has continued to seek new ways of expression and his works have evolved greatly as a result. “Botanical Figuration” “Wind” “Membrane” “HANA” “Spiral” “Memento Mori”-
What is consistent between these themes is the feeling of being connected to something that is invisible yet absolute, a sensation that goes beyond the five senses and stimulates even the sixth sense.
The artist moved to Fukuoka 23 years ago and began painting mainly in yellow for his Membrane series, which was a large shift from his previously monochromatic works. Yellow is the color of the light that falls on life, and the color of pollen. In one of the works from the series, a spiral pattern in the center of a sunflower is portrayed in yellow, as if to celebrate all life in the natural world. In the HANA series, delicate and graceful forms are depicted to show the radiance of life, as well as the fragility of it all. Finally, the Memento Mori series depicts countless butterflies fluttering in the air, in a space somewhere in between life and death.
In this exhibition, you will be able to see Katayama’s newest works as well as his previous works. We are awaiting your visit to our gallery.

MIZOE ART GALLERY TOKYO

The artist will be at the gallery on February 4th, 5th, and the 6th.

On deep green-colored support, square objects covered with gold leaf are rhythmically installed. When he visited Zen temples in Kyoto inspired by "MOSS GARDEN", a song by a rock musician, he was strongly impressed by Hojo North Garden in Tofukuji Temple, a moss garden of checkered pattern. While the garden designer Mirei Shigemori tried painterly expression in the garden by moss and cut stones, Kamikawa expressed the atmosphere on the flat artworks as a garden on a wall.
Although Kamikawa has painted soil colored "THE WALL Series" on the theme of the Chikuho region for a long time,
he pursues the possibility of flat artworks by painting Japanese aesthetic sensibility in MOSS GARDEN.
Enjoy the new world of Shin Kamikawa.

We wish you a very Happy New Year.
Kikuma Mochizuki has been at the forefront of metal sculpting for over half a century. He has created public works in more than 100 locations throughout Japan, and you have probably seen his works at least once. The work that launched his career and led him to pursue sculpture was his graduation work at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music: "META SHOCK," awarded the Salon du Printemps Prize in 1971. This exhibition will show the "Destruction Series" and the “BRASS RIPPING” series-which were born out of the destructive acts of smashing, twisting, and tearing metal-from a brand new perspective. In addition to the latest work from the "As I Wish" series, he will also present the "Past/Future" series, which includes large-scale works that encapsulate his past works and foreshadows his future. Please enjoy the past, present, and future of Kikuma Mochizuki, who continues to surprise us with exhibitions of a scale that far exceeds our expectations.

There are children, animals, bird-like creatures, houses, mountains, stars, and the landscape of the earth in the paintings of Ben Oga. Although they are obviously imagination by the artist, I cannot avoid feeling a sense of deja vu. There are stories including various emotions that take the audience into the world of the paintings to make them become a part of the story. Repeatedly coated paints like fabric will evoke thoughts, memories, hope for the future, and the prayers of happiness that everyone has in common. We would like you to enjoy the painted world of Oga in your own way.

Mizoe Art Gallery will be taking part in Art Taipei 2022.
This will be our seventh time participating in Art Taipei. As with the previous year, we are pleased to introduce two artists who express a uniquely Japanese aesthetic.
The first artist is Kempei Yunde, who questions what true happiness means for humankind through his unique method of expression based on the theme of "painting from the soil up.” His oil paintings are created over a period of one year, as if he were growing a crop. His other style of work is called “drawings,” which he draws up in one go as if to capture the essence of the scenery. A live drawing event of this “Yunde-style drawing” will also be held at the venue.
The second artist is Takahide Komatsu, who base his works on the theme of the ecosystem and illustrates the world of graceful butterflies and small woodland creatures. The combination of Japanese Rimpa-style foil and acrylic paint creates a work that is both highly traditional and contemporary. He is not limited to solely being a painter; his documentary film "Shiotsuki Touho," which follows a Japanese artist from the era of Taiwanese colonial rule, was released last year. We will also hold a special exhibition of Shiotsuki’s works that were featured in the film.
Since the Covid regulations in Taiwan has started to loosen, our gallery staff and the artists will be able to visit the site this year. Online participation by both artists were well received last year, and we look forward to seeing what kind of excitement they will create again this year.
Please enjoy Mizoe Art Gallery’s exhibition.
