Kazutaka Shioi's SHA-KO-SEKI (light reflecting stone) allows one to "hold on to the light of memory”. Pointing to stones of various sizes, all clad in soft colors, Shioi remarks, "These are actually photographs”. He says he walks around mountains, oceans, and temples in search of beautiful natural light, takes photographs of sunlight filtering through trees and surfaces of water, prints them onto Japanese paper, and attaches them to the stones to create his artworks. He turns momentary experiences and emotions into artworks that last forever. Now, as part of a project to connect the world through Sho-Ka-Seki, he uses photographs taken by other people as material for his works. In this exhibition, there will be works of unprecedented scales and new creations. Please come and enjoy the ever-evolving world of Kazutaka Shioi.

《Turn your memorable photos into "SHA-KO-SEKI"!》

We will be holding a workshop to create "SHA-KO-SEKI", led by the artist Kazutaka Shioi.

SHA-KO-SEKI is an object made with light. Kazutaka Shioi fixes onto stones the "light of memory" from photographs of landscapes taken by people. In this workshop, participants will bring their own photos full of memories to create for themselves an original SHA-KO-SEKI.

Chisato Matsumoto finds new ways of expression by using the traditional dyeing method of shibori-zome, not to dye objects but by focusing on the beauty of form that emerges in its process and turning it into sculptural pieces and installations that make full use of space. The scale and dynamism of the art works makes it seem as though each piece is its own entity, multiplying, eroding, and continuing endlessly.
The theme, “the individual and the crowd”, reflects her unique perspective on the grain like forms, in which she turns them into humans. In doing so, she explores the culture and identity of the traditional shibori-zome method, as well as the energy of the modern world through the abstract experience of space.
Matsumoto frees herself by focusing all her energy on the act of shibori, using a single thread to sew together a single piece of fabric, turning it into form. Having learned about shibori-zome for the first time at the age of 19 and continuously being captivated by its beauty ever since, Matsumoto Chisato holds her first solo exhibition. Please look forward to it.

Avant guard art was at its height during the 1960’s, with different movements happening all over Japan. The Kyushu school of anti-art from Fukuoka was especially influential in the development of the anti-art group called “Shudan Kumo”, which was formed in Kitakyushu city. Yasuhide Moriyama, who was a prominent member of this group was arrested as a result of their increasingly extreme and provocative performances. At the end of a 3-year long trial, Moriyama left the court room declaring he will “go back to being a painter”. After 15 years of silence, Moriyama began to create art again, leaving an innumerable amount of work since.
This exhibition will have around 27 of his works from each series he has done since 1987, displaying the trajectory of Moriyama’s art.

Butterflies flutter over the canvas, ornate with Rimpa-style gold and silver leaf.
Shadows of fish swimming freely in the cool current of water. An abstract world that traps the passage of time in a black screen.
All of them depict the Satoyama landscape that Komatsu has been familiar with since he was a child.
The artist’s expression is not just limited to painting. He is currently working on a film about Nakamura Chihei, a great writer from his hometown in Miyazaki Prefecture, following his previous film about Shiotsuki Toho.
His activities that transcend the boundaries of fine art have brought a new air to the paintings that he creates. Please look forward to it.

Awai – a Japanese term referring to an intermediate region: the fleeting time, the space between objects, a turning point. In Kota Nakamura’s world, things of the opposite nature coexist beyond its borders. For example, in a series of his work that use bullets as a medium, he expresses the beauty that can be born out of destruction. Other works of his include an installation that does not feel to the touch as it appears to the eye, and a sculpture embodying an object that he once saw in a dream. Good and evil, beautiful and ugly, the present and the afterlife. The artist dares to questions the ambiguity of visual perception, the unjust nature of the world we live in, and the importance of staying in the space somewhere in between. Perhaps this is a sense of beauty unique to a Japanese person that has lived in New York when the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened.
We are sure that this exhibition will be even more dynamic than the one that took place two and a half years ago.
Please look forward to it.
