The artist will be present at the gallery from 19th to 21st of March. Please contact us about other dates.

On March last year, we held his solo exhibition after an interval of five years at Mizoe Art Gallery Fukuoka. Reunion with JOGASAKI and new works after all this time. Though I was worried during the time he was in silence, there was the world that has not changed. The world full of warmth and affection, and the artist who seriously faces art. The painted motifs in the poetic image are pure, quietly, and seem to be fulfilled with happiness to be themselves. It is exactly like the heart of the artist himself. We will exhibit approximately 30 artworks which are more colorful than the last exhibition. Please enjoy the stories painted by JOGASAKI.

MIZOE ART GALLERY FUKUOKA

The exhibition titled Genichiro Inokuma and Henri Matisse will be held at Mizoe Art Gallery in Fukuoka. Genichiro Inokuma [1902‐1993], an artist who has a strong relationship with Denenchofu is one of the representative artists of postwar abstract painting. The house of Inokuma designed by Junzo Yoshimura, named "Denenchofu house" still remains now.
In 1938, he went to Paris, which was his dream place, to build his studio. After he met Henri Matisse a couple of times, Matisse's word "Your painting is too realistic" became a life lesson for Inokuma. It meant his works were not paintings of himself because he intended too much to be looked better for people. It was also a new starting point for a painter Genichiro Inokuma. Inokuma always questioned "what my expression is" through his practice, and changed his artistic style with time. We introduce the passage by displaying his works of each period. We also exhibit documents including photography with Matisse.

A commemorative photo when he visited Matisse's studio at Nice for the first time on March 23th, 1939. (Probably the person on the right is Inokuma, the center is Matisse, his right is the wife of Inokuma, and the left end is Takanori Ogisu.)

Artworks to be exhibited:
Many artworks by Genichiro Inokuma of each period including oil paintings and prints.
Matisse's artworks such as 2 oil paintings, a drawing, and a print.

"About Yoshishige FURUKAWA and New York"
Guest: Akiko Mashima Listener: Kazunobu Abe

Heartily I wish you a Happy New Year. We look forward to your continued goodwill in the coming year.

It is not sure when I looked at a work of Yoshishige FURUKAWA for the first time. However, as I got more chances to see his works, I got to know the fact that the artist from Fukuoka was active in New York in the early times which made me strongly attracted by his work and life.
On 19th December in 1921, Yoshishige FURUKAWA was born in Fukuoka-shi. He studied in Tokyo Fine Arts School (Tokyo University of the Arts at present) before he was conscripted into the navy. After demobilization, he continued making artworks and exhibitions based in Fukuoka and Tokyo. His artistic style transformed into abstract art influenced by fauvism and cubism. After he went to New York in 1963, he started to pursue his unique abstract expression. Although he had continued lonely practice abroad, he met a sculptor Akiko MASHIMA in 1976 to live together in New York. After coming back to Japan in 2000, he worked based in Sagamihara-shi until 2008 when he passed away at the age of 86.

This exhibition will display around 25 artworks including small works and sketches with the large oil paintings as the main feature that show geometric shapes on the background of rich colors and solid texture which were created after the late 1980s. Also, you can see the artworks by the artists who were acquainted with Furukawa such as Akiko Mashima, a sculptor who is the wife of Furukawa, and Gyoji Nomiyama who knew each other before Tokyo Fine Arts School. Please look at the life and world of Yoshishige FURUKAWA who ran through the turbulent times as a painter.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Akiko Mashima, who made a big contribution to this exhibition, and Koki Ishibashi, who is the eldest son and the representative of KOKI ARTS. (Kazunobu Abe, Mizoe Art Gallery)

Venue: MIZOE ART GALLERY TOKYO

Archaeological sites or excavated ritual implements with the geometric design after Bauhaus, a folk art with industrial design, or Morandi's still life with detonating sound of punk-rock. Kaoru MOCHIZUKI feels effects from both of such contradicting images to pursue attracting line, form, and texture of rotating soil created by a potter's wheel.

The exhibition title "CIRCLE/SQUARE/STRIPE/WRAPPIN" refers to the characteristics of Kaoru MOCHIZUKI's artwork, "circle", "stripes", and the contradiction of "black and white". Also, we introduce "WRAPPIN" by Tetsuya ANDO who is recently collaborating with Kaoru MOCHIZUKI for which he reconstructed the theory of Kintsugi, a Japanese traditional technique. He reproduced scratches and cracks as a new attraction by wrapping cracks and distorted parts that appeared through the making process using leather.

The three at the center are the artworks by Kaoru MOCHIZUKI.

Tetsuya ANDO
Born in 1979. He has worked as TETSUYA ANDO [ T.A.S ] since 2011. Since 2014, he has exhibited 2〜4 times per year in Paris. In 2020, he held an exhibition "LEATHER DRESSED CERAMIC" collaborating with Kaoru MOCHIZUKI at SAVOIR VIVRE. He also collaborates with a variety of artists to create artworks.

Is that a tragedy because people knew to dream?
Here is a strange painter who makes a painting during such a situation

[Tokyo] -ambivalence- Kota NAKAMURA exhibition Nov. 6(Sat) - 23(Mon), 2021

ambivalence: Kota NAKAMURA exhibition
Nov. 6th(Sat) - 23th(Tue), 2021

Venue: MIZOE ART GALLERY TOKYO
*The artist will be present at the gallery on 6,7,13,14,22,23 November, 2021.
*Talking event from 3pm on 6,7 November, 2021.

Ambivalence - this exhibition title implies the world expressed in Kota Nakamura's artworks. Beauty and ugliness, life and death, for example.
That was what caused the frisson when I saw his work for the first time. The beauty of a moment when a bullet pierces matter. A transient and also beautiful shape drawn by time and trajectory that should be an action of taking a life away. A contradiction that it is made by the gentle-mannered and calm person.
His history is also interesting as he has a grandfather who is a Western-style painter, Takuji Nakamura, and he learned contemporary art in New York in the early time where he experienced the simultaneous terrorist attack.

The feeling that I want to know this artist more deeply, want to see what kind of works and exhibition space he creates let me ask him to hold a solo exhibition.
Last autumn, his exhibition in Fukuoka overwhelmingly surpassed expectations.
His exhibition must amaze us again at the mansion of Denenchofu as a stage. Please look forward to it. (Kazunobu ABE, Mizoe Art Gallery)

Mizoe Art Gallery will exhibit remotely at "Art Taipei 2021".
This time, which will be the 6th exhibition, we will introduce two artists who are attracting attention by expressing the aesthetic sense peculiar to Japan. The first is Kenpei YUNDE, who delves into the culture rooted in Asia and draws it with his own technique as if he were plowing a canvas. The second is Takahide KOMATSU, who depicts the world of elegant butterflies and small animals that live quietly in "satoyama" with the theme of ecosystems. His works will be the first exhibition at ART TAIPEI.

This time it is a remote exhibition, and unfortunately the staff of Mizoe Art Gallery is not at the venue. When you come to the venue, please take your time to appreciate the exhibition woven by the two contemporary artists at booth No. V03.
