MIZOE ART GALLERY TOKYO
The exhibition titled Genichiro Inokuma and Henri Matisse will be held at Mizoe Art Gallery in Tokyo.
Genichiro Inokuma [1902‐1993], an artist who has a strong relationship with Denenchofu is one of the representative artists of postwar abstract painting. The house of Inokuma designed by Junzo Yoshimura, named "Denenchofu house" still remains now.
In 1938, he went to Paris, which was his dream place, to build his studio. After he met Henri Matisse a couple of times, Matisse's word "Your painting is too realistic" became a life lesson for Inokuma. It meant his works were not paintings of himself because he intended too much to be looked better for people. It was also a new starting point for a painter Genichiro Inokuma. Inokuma always questioned "what my expression is" through his practice, and changed his artistic style with time. We introduce the passage by displaying his works of each period. We also exhibit documents including photography with Matisse.

A commemorative photo when he visited Matisse's studio at Nice for the first time on March 23th, 1939. (Probably the person on the right is Inokuma, the center is Matisse, his right is the wife of Inokuma, and the left end is Takanori Ogisu.)
