FUKUOKA

Nami Shibata Exhibition "Shadows and 凹凸"
May 18 (Sat) – June 2 (Sun) 2024
10:00am-6:00pm (Open every day during the event)
Venue: MIZOE ART GALLERY FUKUOKA
The artist will be at the gallery on May 18,19, 20, and June 1,2

Since her last solo exhibition "resolution", Shibata has been painting portraits. The figures depicted in her paintings, although certainly in the form of a human, are not quite that of flesh and blood.
This is because, for Shibata, the act of painting is not an attempt to depict the subject itself, but to create "images and textures" from the accumulation of oil paint and brushstrokes.
In Shibata's hands, fictional characters from the world of theater, film, and fairy tales are stripped of any associated imagery and exist only as material paintings, like "dolls" on a small canvas or "shadows" on a large one.
For this exhibition, Shibata attempted portrait paintings of a new and larger scale. Stood before the "shadow" on the large canvas, we invite you to feel the colors, shapes, and unevenness of paint, as well as the artist's breath and brush strokes.
We sincerely look forward to you visiting our gallery.
