Chisato Matsumoto finds new ways of expression by using the traditional dyeing method of shibori-zome, not to dye objects but by focusing on the beauty of form that emerges in its process and turning it into sculptural pieces and installations that make full use of space. The scale and dynamism of the art works makes it seem as though each piece is its own entity, multiplying, eroding, and continuing endlessly.
The theme, “the individual and the crowd”, reflects her unique perspective on the grain like forms, in which she turns them into humans. In doing so, she explores the culture and identity of the traditional shibori-zome method, as well as the energy of the modern world through the abstract experience of space.
Matsumoto frees herself by focusing all her energy on the act of shibori, using a single thread to sew together a single piece of fabric, turning it into form. Having learned about shibori-zome for the first time at the age of 19 and continuously being captivated by its beauty ever since, Matsumoto Chisato holds her first solo exhibition. Please look forward to it.
