“Reflections on Moss Garden”

Masayoshi Sukita
Born in Nogata City, Fukuoka, in 1938.
Photographer best known for his portraits of David Bowie.

Inspired by David Bowie’s song, “MOSS GARDEN,” Kamikawa visited Zen temples in Kyoto. This is when he encountered, and was deeply moved by, the “Koichimatsu Garden”, which is the North Garden of Tofukuji Temple Hobo Garden. The garden designer Mirei Shigemori attempted to create a painting-like expression in the garden using moss and cut stones. The serenity Kamikawa found there is materialized upon a flat surface, as a garden on a wall.
In this exhibition, his gaze shifts upward from the moss garden to the autumn foliage, the rhythm of stone pavements, and even the expansive ocean as seen from the sky above. These works represent a form of tranquility, as well as an aspect of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. Just as seasons change and take on new forms, so does tranquility. We invite you to find a garden which speaks to you, and to reflect.
