Kazutaka Shioi, Solo Show “Landscapes of Contingency”

My recent artist-in-residences in Southeast Asia, through encounters with volcanic landscapes, lakes, and tropical rainforests, as well as the everyday lives and religious perspectives of local people, have made me acutely aware of how profoundly human beings are shaped by their environments. From these experiences emerged diverse forms—photographs, collages, and constructions in iron. Rather than meticulously planned structures, these works embrace distortions born of chance and constraints imposed by necessity, seeking to give form to memories of light, air, and sound.
“Contingency” here signifies not mere accident, but the uncertainty of existence conditioned by circumstances. By exploring the landscapes that arise between chance and necessity, I wish to present how lived experience comes to be generated as an artistic form.

Kazutaka Shioi
Born in Miyazaki Prefecture in 1987 and currently resides in Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. He completed his graduate studies at Fukuoka University of Education (Master of Arts in Education). In 2022, his work "SHA-KO-SEKI" was dedicated to the Munakata-taisha shrine, a World Heritage site.
