In Japan, there are relatively few artists who create bronze sculptures, particularly using the seldom-heard technique of wax casting. Through a series of steps, a form modeled in heated wax is replaced entirely by bronze to create the final sculpture. This material and technique has had a profound influence on Miyazaki’s forms of expression. At the same time, his long-standing research on gilt-bronze Buddhist sculptures has instilled in him a deep respect for materials that withstand the passage of centuries—a reverence that brings a quiet, invigorating tension to his work.
Miyazaki states, “Having worked with materials such as bronze, wood, and stone, I now wish to release myself from all constraints and enter a freer realm of creation.” In addition to recent works embodying that vision, the exhibition will highlight over 40 pieces tracing his artistic journey through the years, displayed both inside and outside the gallery.
