02. Artist Talk
January 24, 15:00–
We would like extend our heartfelt New Year’s greetings.
For our first exhibition of the year, we are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Kikuma Mochizuki, who has reached the age of 80 and continues to lead a distinguished career as a sculptor.
“Can Destruction Become Creation?”
To create something is, in itself, an accumulation of destructive acts.
With this idea as the foundation of his artistic career, Kikuma Mochizuki debuted the Destruction Series in the 1970s. Its culmination is "BRASS RIPPING", a work created by heating and ripping apart sheets of brass.
“All Art Is an Evocative Device”
Mochizuki introduced the Evocative Device Series in the 1980s, based on the belief that art should speak to the viewers, moving their hearts and evoking emotions. One of the representative works from the series is "Horizon of the Void", featured as the main visual.
From around 2010, guided by the conviction that not only artists, but all people should be free, he began the As One Wishes series. Seeking liberation from the self, he continued its production through 2024–2025. The result is the central work of this exhibition, "FREEDOM".
We invite you to witness the 55-year trajectory of sculptor Kikuma Mochizuki.
