’What Gyoji NOMIYAMA Left Us’

It is hard to believe that three years have already passed since Gyoji Nomiyama passed away. I can still vividly remember the warm smile with which he would greet me, saying, “Hi!”
Although he now lives on only in our memories, his works continue to speak to us with remarkable energy, stirring our senses and emotions.
What was he truly seeking to express?
Through a dialogue with his works, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the essence of Nomiyama’s artistic vision. Approximately 35 works will be presented, including oil paintings, watercolours, and prints spanning his early years to the final period of his career, together with several newly acquired works.

He will talk about the origins of Nomiyama’s art, from the postwar period to his time in France.

■Gyoji NOMIYAMA (1920-2023)
Born and passed away in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
1943 Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (current Tokyo University of the Arts) and was called up for military service and sent off to Manchuria.
1952- 1964 France
1958 Received the 2nd Yasui Prize
1968-1981 Became an associate professor at Tokyo University of the Arts
1992 Received the 42nd Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts
1996 Received the Mainichi Art Award
2000 Received recognition as a Person of Cultural Merit
2014 Received the Order of Culture
