Biography

1928 Born February 3, in Kanazawa City, as the second son to father Yu and mother Shigeyo.
1948 won the Ishikawa Governor's Prize at the 4th Ishikawa Contemporary Art Exhibition in Kanazawa.
1950 graduated from Kanazawa College of Arts and Crafts (now Kanazawa College of Art), with a Major in Western-style painting, taught by Saburo Miyamoto.
1952 joined the Rokko Institute of Western Painting, where he worked with Yukio Kodama, Masaru Nakanishi, and others to teach younger artists.
1959 held a solo exhibition at the Kobe Shimbun Kaikan 4th floor gallery, exhibiting 15 recent works.
He and his wife made their first trip to France, staying mainly in Paris.
1962 exhibited at the 6th Shell Art Award Exhibition and received an honorable mention.
1969 awarded the Excellence Prize at the 4th Showa-kai Exhibition.
Received the Yasui Prize at the 12th Yasui Prize Exhibition.
1973 awarded the Minister of Education Prize at the Niki Exhibition.
1975 a three-person exhibition of Rei Kamoi, Yoshika Fujita, and Sada Yamamoto was held at Kinokuniya Gallery in Shinjuku.
Held his first solo exhibition in the U.S. at the Hammer Gallery in New York.
1984 Kamoi exhibited 10 pastel paintings at Fukuoka Nichido Gallery as a supporting artist.
In the same year, he was hospitalized several times due to poor health.
1985 “Rei Kamoi Art Book: Dreaming” was published by Nichido Publishing Department, and an exhibition was held at the Nichido Gallery in Nagoya to commemorate the publication of the book.
On September 7, he passed away at his home in Kobe at the age of 57.
2020 “35 years after his death, Rei Kamoi Exhibition” was held at Kurume City Museum of Art, and traveled throughout Japan.
