Gyoji Nomiyama
1920 Born in Honami-mura, Kaho-gun, Fukuoka prefecture (current Iizuka city).
1942 Selected for the 20th Shunyo-kai
1943 Graduated early from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (current Tokyo University of the Arts) due to the war. Drafted into the military and sent off to Manchuria.
1948 Received the Association award at the 12th Jiyu-bijyutsu-association Exhibition, as well as an invitation to become a member.

1952 Moved to France.
1956 Became a member of Le Salon d’Automne.
1958 Received the 2nd Yasui Prize.
1964 Returned to Japan.

1981 Resigned from Tokyo University of the Arts.
1983 First retrospective exhibition “Gyoji Nomiyama Exhibition” held at Kita-Kyushu Municipal Museum of Art and Tokyo Central Art Museum.
1992 Received the 42nd Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts.
1994 Received the 1st Fukuoka Culture Award.
1996 Received the Mainichi Art Award.
1996 “Gyoji Nomiyama Exhibition” held at Nerima Art Museum in Tokyo.
2000 Received recognition as a Person of Cultural Merit.
2003 “Gyoji Nomiyama Exhibition” held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (toured Ooita, Toyama and Aichi prefecture until 2004).
2005 Received the Kikuchi Kan Prize along with Seiichiro Kuboshima for their contributions to the establishment of the Mugon-kan, a silent art museum built in memoriam of art students whose lives were taken by the war.
2008 Completed the stained glass mural at the Tokyo metro Jingumae station titled “We will meet someday”
2011 Completed the stained glass mural at JR Hakata station titled “From Beyond the Sea”.
“Gyoji Nomiyama Exhibition” held at Ishibashi Museum of Art and Bridgestone Museum of Art.
2012 Completed of the stained glass mural at Fukuoka Airport international terminal titled “Port of the Sky”.
2013 “Gyoji Nomiyama Exhibition, Indelible Things” held at Onomichi City Museum of Art.
2014 Received the Order of Culture.

2017 Completed the stained glass mural in the new building of the Fukuoka Iizuka City Hall titled “Homing Day”.
2020 Completed the stained glass mural at the Tokyo Metro Ginza line Aoyama-itchome station titled “Everyone is Freinds”

Passed away on June 22.
Until his death at the age of 102, he continued to create artwork in Tokyo and Fukuoka (Iijima city) where he based his studio. Numerous books published.
