Kikuma Mochizuki
Kikuma Mochizuki has been active at the forefront of metal sculpture in Japan. He graduated from the graduate school of Tokyo National University of Arts in 1971, and began his career with the "Destruction Series," focusing on the fact that a single act of creation is an accumulation of destructive acts such as beating, stretching, cutting, and making a hole. Since then, he has continued to develop a diverse series of works. While winning numerous art awards, he has created public art in more than 100 locations in Japan.
Beginning adding simple power to simple materials, and he sometimes assembles what he has stripped away, sometimes incorporates different materials, and evolves his techniques and methods of expression in a complex manner. The artist's activities over the past 50 years themselves illustrate that destruction and creation are two sides of the same coin.
