Avant guard art was at its height during the 1960’s, with different movements happening all over Japan. The Kyushu school of anti-art from Fukuoka was especially influential in the development of the anti-art group called “Shudan Kumo”, which was formed in Kitakyushu city. Yasuhide Moriyama, who was a prominent member of this group was arrested as a result of their increasingly extreme and provocative performances. At the end of a 3-year long trial, Moriyama left the court room declaring he will “go back to being a painter”. After 15 years of silence, Moriyama began to create art again, leaving an innumerable amount of work since.
This exhibition will have around 27 of his works from each series he has done since 1987, displaying the trajectory of Moriyama’s art.

“Once you see it, you won’t forget”. All those who see Chisato Matsumoto’s works will feel the same. The artist finds new ways of expression by using the traditional dyeing method of shibori-zome, not to dye objects but by focusing on the beauty of form that emerges in its process and turning it into sculptural pieces and installations that make full use of space. The scale and dynamism of the art works makes it seem as though each piece is its own entity, multiplying, eroding, and continuing endlessly.
The theme, “the individual and the crowd”, reflects her unique perspective on the grain like forms, in which she turns them into humans. In doing so, she explores the culture and identity of the traditional shibori-zome method, as well as the energy of the modern world through the abstract experience of space.
Matsumoto frees herself by focusing all her energy on the act of shibori, using a single thread to sew together a single piece of fabric, turning it into form. Having learned about shibori-zome for the first time at the age of 19 and continuously being captivated by its beauty ever since, Matsumoto Chisato holds her first solo exhibition. Please look forward to it.

Butterflies flutter over the canvas, ornate with Rimpa-style gold and silver leaf.
Shadows of fish swimming freely in the cool current of water. An abstract world that traps the passage of time in a black screen.
All of them depict the Satoyama landscape that Komatsu has been familiar with since he was a child.
The artist’s expression is not just limited to painting. He is currently working on a film about Nakamura Chihei, a great writer from his hometown in Miyazaki Prefecture, following his previous film about Shiotsuki Toho.
His activities that transcend the boundaries of fine art have brought a new air to the paintings that he creates. Please look forward to it.
