Kazutaka Shioi's SHA-KO-SEKI (light reflecting stone) allows one to "hold on to the light of memory”. Pointing to stones of various sizes, all clad in soft colors, Shioi remarks, "These are actually photographs”. He says he walks around mountains, oceans, and temples in search of beautiful natural light, takes photographs of sunlight filtering through trees and surfaces of water, prints them onto Japanese paper, and attaches them to the stones to create his artworks. He turns momentary experiences and emotions into artworks that last forever. Now, as part of a project to connect the world through Sho-Ka-Seki, he uses photographs taken by other people as material for his works. In this exhibition, there will be works of unprecedented scales and new creations. Please come and enjoy the ever-evolving world of Kazutaka Shioi.

《Turn your memorable photos into "SHA-KO-SEKI"!》

We will be holding a workshop to create "SHA-KO-SEKI", led by the artist Kazutaka Shioi.

SHA-KO-SEKI is an object made with light. Kazutaka Shioi fixes onto stones the "light of memory" from photographs of landscapes taken by people. In this workshop, participants will bring their own photos full of memories to create for themselves an original SHA-KO-SEKI.

Chisato Matsumoto finds new ways of expression by using the traditional dyeing method of shibori-zome, not to dye objects but by focusing on the beauty of form that emerges in its process and turning it into sculptural pieces and installations that make full use of space. The scale and dynamism of the art works makes it seem as though each piece is its own entity, multiplying, eroding, and continuing endlessly.
The theme, “the individual and the crowd”, reflects her unique perspective on the grain like forms, in which she turns them into humans. In doing so, she explores the culture and identity of the traditional shibori-zome method, as well as the energy of the modern world through the abstract experience of space.
Matsumoto frees herself by focusing all her energy on the act of shibori, using a single thread to sew together a single piece of fabric, turning it into form. Having learned about shibori-zome for the first time at the age of 19 and continuously being captivated by its beauty ever since, Matsumoto Chisato holds her first solo exhibition. Please look forward to it.
