MIZOE ART GALLERY TOKYO

The exhibition titled Genichiro Inokuma and Henri Matisse will be held at Mizoe Art Gallery in Tokyo.
Genichiro Inokuma [1902‐1993], an artist who has a strong relationship with Denenchofu is one of the representative artists of postwar abstract painting. The house of Inokuma designed by Junzo Yoshimura, named "Denenchofu house" still remains now.
In 1938, he went to Paris, which was his dream place, to build his studio. After he met Henri Matisse a couple of times, Matisse's word "Your painting is too realistic" became a life lesson for Inokuma. It meant his works were not paintings of himself because he intended too much to be looked better for people. It was also a new starting point for a painter Genichiro Inokuma. Inokuma always questioned "what my expression is" through his practice, and changed his artistic style with time. We introduce the passage by displaying his works of each period. We also exhibit documents including photography with Matisse.

A commemorative photo when he visited Matisse's studio at Nice for the first time on March 23th, 1939. (Probably the person on the right is Inokuma, the center is Matisse, his right is the wife of Inokuma, and the left end is Takanori Ogisu.)

Artworks to be exhibited:
Many artworks by Genichiro Inokuma of each period including oil paintings and prints. Matisse's artworks such as oil paintings, a drawing, and a print. (Artworks to be exhibited as reference: An oil painting by Picasso, an oil painting by Takanori Ogisu)

On deep green-colored support, square objects covered with gold leaf are rhythmically installed. When he visited Zen temples in Kyoto inspired by "MOSS GARDEN", a song by a rock musician, he was strongly impressed by Hojo North Garden in Tofukuji Temple, a moss garden of checkered pattern. While the garden designer Mirei Shigemori tried painterly expression in the garden by moss and cut stones, Kamikawa expressed the atmosphere on the flat artworks as a garden on a wall.
Although Kamikawa has painted soil colored "THE WALL Series" on the theme of the Chikuho region for a long time,
he pursues the possibility of flat artworks by painting Japanese aesthetic sensibility in MOSS GARDEN.
Enjoy the new world of Shin Kamikawa.

"Where do you live?" 2020 Oil on canvas 63.77x51.18 in 162 x 130 cm

On 9th January this year, the next day after the second state of emergency was announced, I visited the first day of Nomiyama Gyoji: Exhibition Celebrating His 100th Birthday at Nihombashi Takashimaya. At the moment I stepped in, I was overwhelmed by the energy of the artworks, overflowing vitality, as well as the wave of colors and brushstrokes. It is surprising that most of them were painted after the year 2000, in recent years. Every time I visited his studio after that, he faced a new canvas every time by himself. His creative urge is growing rather than declining.
One-fifth of the 21st century has passed. In a time hit by unprecedented disaster, Gyoji Nomiyama shows us a ray of hope. In this exhibition, we display approximately 35 artworks including large works focusing on his works after 2000.

"People often asked whether my painting is figurative or abstract.
I only paint what my eyes see. To paint is to pull out the shape lurking behind visible things onto the surface of artwork" This is what Gyoji Nomiyama said who is famous for abstract paintings. Actually, artworks that we think abstract painting are often shapes of objects painted through the filter of the artist's eyes.
Then what makes it an abstract painting? "Cool" "Modern" "Not understandable" People get a variety of feelings from abstract artworks.

By exhibiting abstract artworks from our collection, we want you to consider what artists want to express and to feel the merriment of appreciating art. (Mizoe Art Gallery, Kazunobu Abe)

Mizoe Art Gallery Fukuoka: New Annex

Toho SHIOTSUKI is a Japanese artist who spread western art for the first time in prewar Taiwan under Japanese rule. He gave a big influence on the art world of Taiwan by founding the Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition. In 1921, Toho SHIOTSUKI went to Taiwan as an educator of the Japanese government side. Although he was fascinated by indigenous people and the culture, Japan ran its course toward assimilation policy and war...What did Toho SHIOTSUKI express in the turbulent time and the environment with which he conflicted with?
This exhibition shows the artworks of Toho SHIOTSUKI and the artists who were involved with him. Please take a look imagining the background the artist lived in.

Toho SHIOTSUKI
Born in Saito-shi, Miyazaki Prefecture. His real name is Zenkichi Nagano. After graduating from Miyazaki normal school, he entered a normal art course at Tokyo Fine Art School. After working as a teacher for nine years, he went to Taiwan at his age of 35 in 1921. Takahide KOMATSU would remind you of the paintings on which elegant butterflies and the world of small animals living quietly in peri-urban woodlands are painted.
Since a couple of years ago, he has expressed the change of artificial objects in peri-urban woodlands with the passage of time in abstract painting. He developed those styles to "Carbonization" displayed in this exhibition. His diverse ability of expression is not limited to painting. It let him produce a documentary film "Toho Shiotsuki" that researched an underrated artist for three years. What motivated him so much? Was it the fascination of the artworks or agreement to "liberty of artist" and the way of living as he tells? The answer is in the film and his artworks. Please enjoy co-acting of the two artists who met across time. (Kazunobu Abe / Mizoe Art Gallery)

*Live drawing show is going on 22 - 30 May by the artist.

Takashi YATOJI works on creative activity based in Saga. He has been known as an up-and-coming artist since his earlier age in the art scene of Kyushu. At his age of 22, he surprised people around him by winning the grand prize at Eiten (Tagawa Museum of Art) as the youngest. In the same year, he got attention when he was accepted into MCAGP Mitsubishi Corporation Art Gate Program and selected as a scholarship student. Since then, he has been active in various fields.
His style changed from the earlier artworks characterized by the composition of colorful and complicated lines and surfaces. The number of colors, elements such as lines, and areas were minimized to get to the motifs more accurately. He keeps on discovering the possibility of two-dimensional expression by painting the same motifs with different approaches many times.
"A painting cannot be finished without intention. It gradually gets out of control. I think the important thing is to communicate with painting." The artist facing his painting seriously holds the first solo exhibition in Tokyo at the age of 30. We hope his art breathes new life into society tired of the epidemic. Please have a look at Now of the artist who will show further evolution and transition.
