Tomonori TOYOFUKU Exhibition
May 15th(Sat) ― May 30th (Sun), 2021
10:00am-6:00pm (Open every day during the event)
Venue: MIZOE ART GALLERY FUKUOKA

Two years ago on 18th May 2019, Mr. Tomonori TOYOFUKU passed away. I received a call in the early morning. When I got his home, he was resting with a calm face surrounded by his artworks and favorite antiques. He was at the age of 94.
Mr. TOYOFUKU did not speak much since we met for the first time. However, his silence made me feel something he did not tell. He was once on the edge of death as a suicide pilot soon before the war ended. Although he lived the following 40 years in Milan, Italy, he aimed to live as a Japanese more than anyone else. The emotion put into each carving seems to talk to us sitting dignifiedly like their father.
On the third anniversary, we would like to praise the great achievements of this world-famous sculptor. This exhibition focuses on the wood sculptures left at his atelier displaying them together with the bronze works and drawings.
We are waiting for your visit.

*The artist will be present at the gallery on 28,29,30,31 March, 2021.

Five years have passed since the last solo exhibition. Reunion with JOGASAKI and new works after all this time. Though I was worried during the time he was in silence, there was the world that has not changed. The world full of warmth and affection, and the artist who seriously faces art. The painted motifs in the poetic image are pure, quietly, and seem to be fulfilled with happiness to be themselves. It is exactly like the heart of the artist himself.
At the same time, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum holds an exhibition that shows only large works among which mainly new works with past representative works. We hope you visit both of the exhibitions to experience the world of an artist, Satoru JOGASAKI.

[Fukuoka] What is Abstract Painting? Exhibition Feb 20th (Sat) – Mar 7th (Sun), 2021

The More Incomprehensible, the More Interesting!
What is Abstract Painting? Exhibition

February 20th (Sat) – March 7th (Sun), 2021
10:00am-6:00pm (Open every day during the event)
Venue: MIZOE ART GALLERY FUKUOKA

"People often asked whether my painting is figurative or abstract.
I only paint what my eyes see. To paint is to pull out the shape lurking behind visible things onto the surface of artwork" This is what Gyoji Nomiyama said who is famous for abstract paintings. Actually, artworks that we think abstract painting are often shapes of objects painted through the filter of the artist's eyes.
Then what makes it an abstract painting? "Cool" "Modern" "Not understandable" People get a variety of feelings from abstract artworks.

By exhibiting abstract artworks from our collection, we want you to consider what artists want to express and to feel the merriment of appreciating art. (Mizoe Art Gallery, Kazunobu Abe)

Happy New Year! Wishing you all the best as we head into 2021.

We are sincerely grateful for your support in the Corona crisis last year. We hope the pandemic ends as soon as possible and wish you health.

The first public display: LEONARD TSUGUHARU FOUJITA “Nu sur un lit, avec un chien (Reclining Nude with A Small Dog)”

In 1921, Tsuguharu Foujita submitted a portrait of milky-white female nude to Salon d'automne for the first time which made him the favorite of École de Paris. As a widely accepted theory, the artwork is said to be "Reclining Nude with a Cat" at Petit Palais in Geneve. The work we display this time was painted in the same year depicting the same model, which was sleeping under a European collector for a long time.
We hope the beginning of the new year offers you the opportunity to experience the excitement of Parisians fascinated by "milky-white skin" and "Eastern beauty" that Foujita gained after years of effort. We sincerely wait for your visits.

The imaginary landscape that seems to close in on the essence of the objects in a simplified image. I was attracted at the first glance in the emotional, serene, and poetic world that moves my mind. While I followed the track of the artist to know what kind of person he was, I got to know he was a person of integrity whom everyone admired. Quiet, thoughtful, and warm. He trained the younger at Kitakyushu Free Painting Atelier and the College of Art at Nihon University. People who have been under his tutelage praise his character unanimously.
This exhibition will show about 25 artworks we collected thinking of the artist who I wanted to meet for once. We are waiting for your visit.
